A Yalanchee (Stuffed Grape Leaves) Throw-Down!

A yalanchee cook-off? What a brilliant idea! It sounds like a great way to raise money and stake one’s claim as the area’s top yalanchee-maker.

St. Hagop Armenian Church in Pinellas Park, FL (on Florida's west coast) began this Lenten event several years ago, each time with about 12 contestants. The church will be hosting their 3rd annual “Yalanchee Throw-Down”, this coming Sunday, March 27, 2011 right after church.

Participants register in advance to enter their homemade yalanchee recipes, then provide 100 yalanchees on the day of the event. Those who don’t cook, but like to eat yalanchee are invited to purchase a sampler plate for $10. After tasting each entrant’s yalanchee, judges conduct an evaluation and  declare a winner. For the past two years the St. Hagop Yalanchee Champion has been Debra Kamajian, Chair of the Women’s Guild.

Let’s see who comes out on top this year. TheArmenianKitchen.com wishes each contestant the Best of Luck!

  2. Chris, I live too far from St. Hagop Armenian Church to participate, also. But we wish all who've entered lots of luck. Truth be told, I would have enjoyed being one of the judges!
